Our Role - MoDOT Planning Framework

Our planning partnership with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is a core component of our organization.

Mid-MO Regional Planning Commission is one of 19 regional planning commissions in the state that the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) relies on to identify transportation needs. We are an integral part of MoDOT’s planning framework, which focuses on bottom-up decision making that relies on the public and local officials to help identify transportation needs in the state.

Mid-MO Regional Planning Commission maintains a regional transportation plan and coordinates annual updates of our area’s transportation needs. This includes road and bridge needs and multimodal needs, such as airport, rail, port, transit, and pedestrian requirements.

Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC)

Mid-MO Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) is an integral part of the transportation planning process. The committee has six members, and each member represents one of Mid-MO RPC’s six counties. The primary responsibility of the committee is to discuss and prioritize road, bridge, and multimodal transportation needs in the region. The committee is also responsible for scoring grant applications and recommending regional priorities for MoDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and Transportation Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP).

Regional Transportation Need List

The transportation needs list gets updated annually. The process begins with a series of regional meetings, which inform discussions of our Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC). In the fall of each year, Mid-MO RPC conducts transportation meetings in each of our six counties to identify and prioritize transportation needs. These needs are then brought to our Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), which discusses and prioritizes the list from a regional perspective. The regional transportation needs list is submitted to MoDOT each December to inform discussions as MoDOT completes the annual update to its Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
