The level of environmental review required varies considerably depending on project activities. It can range from projects which will clearly have no impact on the physical environment (Exempt) to those which will have a very large impact, such as new highway construction (Environmental Impact Statement). Most projects for which local governments seek assistance require either a Statutory Checklist or an Environmental Assessment, although some projects will qualify as Exempt.
